SIEVE

Level 01 · Zero Or One. Every one of the six rungs you can hang first keeps a five-rung answer alive, because nothing has been put in order yet for a rung to be wrong about. Hang one, and of the five taps left exactly one still does.

  1. 01Tap one wire, then another. A rung hangs between them and compares the two.
  2. 02The smaller value goes to the earlier wire. Build a column that sorts all sixteen patterns.
  3. 03UNSORTED counts the patterns still coming out wrong. Par is five rungs.

about this game

SIEVE, Sort every input, by testing sixteen.

A column of wires and the rungs you hang between them. A rung compares the two wires it joins and puts the smaller value on the earlier one, so a column of rungs is a machine that sorts, and the puzzle is to build one. Underneath it is a theorem: a network that sorts every input made only of zeros and ones sorts every input there is. Four wires have twenty four orderings and only sixteen zero-one patterns, so the sixteen on screen are not a sample. They are the whole proof.
